Under the leadership of Tozama Kulati Siwisa, Executive Director and Head of Corporate Affairs at West Wits Mining, the company officially launched its Food Vendor Project at the Qala Shallows site, a community-focused enterprise initiative designed to create sustainable local business opportunities directly linked to mining activity.
Tozama has been instrumental in spearheading the development and implementation of the company’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP) and Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) initiatives, with a strong focus on ensuring that local communities participate meaningfully in the economic opportunities created through the Qala Shallows project.
The Food Vendor Project represents one of the practical outcomes of this vision — moving beyond policy commitments to create visible, operational opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Through the initiative, selected vendors have been equipped with professionally branded and fitted food containers, with supporting infrastructure and compliance processes already underway to prepare the businesses for operation.
For Tozama, the project reflects a deeply personal commitment to inclusive development and community participation within the mining sector.
“For me, sustainable mining is not only about extracting resources — it is about creating opportunities for people. Spearheading initiatives like this and seeing local entrepreneurs step into businesses that can grow alongside the mine is incredibly rewarding. This is the kind of impact our Social and Labour Plan should create within communities.” — Tozama Kulati Siwisa
The initiative forms part of West Wits Mining’s broader strategy to support local enterprise development, strengthen community partnerships and drive long-term socio-economic participation around Qala Shallows.
