Communities are a fundamental part of the mining value chain—particularly in South Africa, where long-term success is closely linked to shared value and meaningful local impact.
In this interview with The Miner Podcast, Tozama Kulati Siwisa reflects on her role as Executive Director and Head of Corporate Affairs at West Wits Mining, and the responsibility of helping shape one of the first new underground mine developments in over 15 years.
The conversation explores:
• Community development and structured stakeholder engagement
• Navigating the realities of Zama Zama activity
• Advancing women in mining
• Delivering on Social and Labour Plans (SLPs)
• Building investor confidence through responsible mining
At the heart of this work is her leadership philosophy:
“I would want to be remembered for leading with empathy. No one is coming to save you, you have to have the drive to want to win. Empowerment does not mean to be spoon-fed; it means stepping forward and competing amongst thousands of equally qualified people. And I hold those around me accountable.
Most importantly: transparency and truth. Nothing destroys trust faster than lies or overpromising.”
